Move to Canada With Work Visa...

In order for foreign individuals to move to Canada, they should first secure a work visa under the sponsorship of a Canadian employer. A work permit grants the right to live temporarily in Canada, but it is not intended to allow for possible immigration or permanent residence. The number and type of work permits issued are mainly based on the local labour needs. The Canadian work permit does not require a certain points threshold, unlike other types of visa, instead, it is the sponsorship of a Canadian employer that matters most in gaining approval.

Work permits are not transferable, so each foreign worker must apply for a personal visa in order to move to Canada. An individual’s immigration status can be changed during the lifetime of a work permit. When considering dependents, a work visa also allows them to move to Canada along with the principal holder. However, dependents must secure work visas for themselves in order to work in Canada.

To apply for a work permit, you must wait for the announcement of the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) concerning the availability of overseas job openings. You then send your visa request to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and if your prospective employer is in Quebec, you also need to secure approval from the provincial immigration authority.

There are certain professionals who can enter Canada, albeit for only a brief stay, without a work visa. They include airline inspectors, expert witnesses and investigators, government representatives or diplomats, reporters and flight attendants.

Amman City Guide...

International flights to Amman arrive at the Queen Alia International Airport. Some of the airlines that operate routes from the UK to and from Amman are Northwest, Lufthansa, Delta, British Airways, BMI, KLM, Emirates and Qantas.

Being the site of the ancient capital, Rabbath-Ammon, Citadel Hill is one of the major tourist attractions in the city. Archaeologists uncovered relics and ancient artefacts from the site, which are now under the care of the Jordan Archaeological Museum, located at the Hill itself. Among these antiquities are some that date back to as early as the Stone Age, while others take the form of the remains of ancient structures, like the Umayyad Palace (al-Qasr), a Byzantine basilica and the Great Temple of Amman. A copy of the Mesha Stele and Iron Age sarcophagi are just two of the historical treasures kept by the museum.

Taxis and buses are the common means of transport in the city. Taxis charge reasonable fares, based on the meter and taxi drivers are helpful in guiding tourists as they navigate the city. From the airport, you can also take a Regular Airport Express bus, which runs from the arrival terminals to Abdali Station.

Nightlife in Jordan is not as loud as it is in non-Islamic countries. Alcohol is not available in some of the popular venues and almost all pubs are closed by 2am. Among the few nightclubs and bars in Jordan are the Irish Pub, located at the base level of the Dove Hotel; Salute, situated behind the Iraqi Embassy and JJ’s, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

Taking Your Pet on a Ferry...

Pet lovers can enjoy taking their pet on their travels on the cross Channel ferries for a small fee. The routes of Dover-Calais and Hull-Rotterdam/Zeebrugge can accommodate pet(s), but not the Portsmouth-Bilbao route, which due to the duration of the trip does not carry pets.

For the Dover-Calais route, motorists who book a trip should check-in an hour before departure. Any pets should stay in their vehicles for the duration of the ferry trip. As for the Hull-Rotterdam/Zeebrugge route, check-in time should be at least 90 minutes before the scheduled crossing of the channel, and pets are housed in air-conditioned compartments located on the same vehicle decks.

For the latter route, P & O Ferries only allow guide and hearing dogs for foot passengers. On the other hand, for the Dover-Calais route, pets can be taken by foot passengers, provided that the animals are placed in lockable containers. These pets are also secured on the ferry’s lower deck.

Bookings for the Hull-Rotterdam/Zeebrugge route can only be made through a telephone call if you wish to take your pet, not online.

Not only cats and dogs can take advantage of this great opportunity to travel. Rabbits, even mice and guinea pigs, can also travel with you if you so wish.  Just check out the requirements of your destination port regarding animals before you travel.

Travellers should plan their trip well beforehand, as cats and dogs are required to be properly vaccinated prior to going on board. They should also check the Defra website to inquire as to the PETS passport scheme.

US Immigration and Visa types...

The USA has a long history of adopting new immigrants to help the country prosper and although the US immigration process is a little complex and confusing, the country remains one of the most popular immigration destinations in the world. The USA has more than 60 types of non-immigrant or non-permanent visas and several visas for permanent residency. Members of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) handle all US visa applications.

If a foreign individual wishes to obtain a US visa for a short period of time, they should apply for a B1 business visa or submit an application for a B2 travel visa. For those who intend living and working in the country for an extended period of time, an L1 visa or H1B visa application should be submitted.

Foreign individuals who wish to establish their own business in the USA should request an E1 or E2 visa application. E1 and E2 visas have a maximum validity of five years and both offer the holder an opportunity to apply for a US Green Card.

For foreigners who are planning to move to the USA to live permanently, there are several routes open to them, based on family relationship, the American “Green Card Lottery,” and employment opportunities.

If taking the employment opportunities route, the EB-1, EB-2, EB-3, EB-4 and EB-5 visas allow holders to apply for permanent residency in the country.

An individual may also apply for a Green Card if he or she has a sibling, parent, spouse or fiancé already residing in the country.

Another option is the annual US “Green Card Lottery”, which randomly chooses candidates from under-represented countries to live and work in the country.

European culture and sport...

There are 50 sovereign states that make up the continent of Europe, as well as six regions or territories that are partially recognised. These states and territories are home to over 700 million inhabitants, all known as “Europeans” but whose diversity is evident in the areas of language, religion, government, philosophy, culture, economy, etc. When speaking of a “European culture,” it is difficult to separate the overlapping, cross-cultural diversities that make up the “culture” of this vast continent. In the area of European sports, however, we can speak in terms of similarities and differences, all of which contribute to form a healthy blend of apolitical, cross-cultural cooperation and understanding.

In recent years, attitudes to sports as a means of fostering intercultural harmony have been a strong force behind the policies and treaties of the European nations. In 2008, against the backdrop of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, European Union (EU) sports ministers adopted a joint declaration on Social Significance and Dialogue in Sport. A declaration was also appended to the Amsterdam Treaty of 1997, emphasising the “social significance of sport, in particular, its role in forging identity and bringing people together.” In terms of the most popular sport in Europe, football is number one. Governed by a pan-European body called the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), there are over 50 national football associations, whose official languages are English, German, and French. Other popular European sports include basketball, volleyball, ice hockey, bicycle racing, and rugby.

Moscow City Guide...

Visitors from most Western countries to Russia, including Moscow, require visas. Tourist visas are valid for 30 days, while business visas last for 60 days. Anyone making multiple business visits to the country can do so by obtaining repeat entry visas, which are valid for six months. Some of the airlines that offer flights to Moscow from the UK and other EU countries include Air France, Alitalia, Finnair, LOT, Iberia, Lufthansa, TAP, Cyprus, BMI, SN Brussels and Air Europa.

Moscow has an efficient railway system serving Prague, Warsaw, Helsinki and Budapest. Other lines connect the city with Athens, Amsterdam, Tallinn, Brussels, Berlin, Bucharest, Paris, Riga, Vilnius, Frankfurt and Venice.

Travel within the city is efficient and simple for visitors, with the Metro underground system, trams and buses, which are usually available from 5:30am to 12:30am. The Metro network has over 150 terminals and passengers can pay their fare by cash or use multi-trip plastic cards and season passes. Route-taxis are available between 8:00am and 10:00pm. There are also a number of car rental car services available, with weekly rates starting from around US$60.

Tourist destinations abound in Moscow include museums like the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum, Tretyakov Gallery and Gorky House Museum. The square is also the location of the world-renowned GUM department store and historic St. Basil’s Cathedral.

Experience a glimpse into the past – Azerbai...

A hidden gem among Eastern European destinations is the country of Azerbaijan. This ancient Persian country boasts some of the most impressive ancient structures in Europe, and is one of those out-of-the-way destinations that most travellers brush over in their search for a more common location.

You will need to apply for a traveller’s visa from the Azerbaijan Embassy. More information can be found at their website (www.azembassy.org.uk), but it is a fairly straight-forward and relatively painless process.

Any travellers coming to Azerbaijan for the first time will want to stick to the capital city of Baku. You can fly in direct, and accommodation is easy to find. Travel will be by bus and taxi. The city is a maze of old mixed in with new, and is a sheer delight to immerse yourself in.

The modern gardens and fountains, combined with elegant seaside spots along the Caspian Sea and contemporary restaurants are beginning to bring this country into the spotlight as one of the premier destinations within the Caucasus region. But it is also the rich history of this city that draws the tourists in.

The ancient fortress that makes up the centre of the city is a maze of narrow valleys and ancient buildings, along with a mosque, palace, and minaret that date back from the 11th century. There are also dozens of locations scattered around the countryside, such as the area around Gobustan where you can view literal graffiti carved into the cave walls by the Roman legionnaires of Alexander the Great’s army from the 4th century BC … 2000 year old carvings!

Be warned though: travel outside of Baku will require plenty of planning and hiking as buses do not travel everywhere, driving is not recommended, and hotel accommodation can be sparse. Still, for an adventure out in the far reaches of Europe, you will not find a more exhilarating time.

European cruise holidays...

As a cruise traveller there are some wonderful European cruising holidays one can take. Because Europe is such a vast continent with diverse climates and landmark features, you would be right to expect the range of cruises available to be as diverse as the many different countries.

For example, there are cruises to Northern Europe, ranging from Baltic Sea cruises to trips to the Norwegian Fjords. These offer a spectacular means for getting to know the topography of some of the world’s most glorious natural and historical locations.

There are also cruises around the British Isles, taking the traveller on a tour of five countries, rich in sights and attractions. Western European cruises can also include travels to the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. Southern European cruises, meanwhile, are offered for travellers to Turkey, Greece, the Black Sea and the islands in the Mediterranean. When travelling to Eastern Europe, one can go on a river cruise along the Danube, and visit countries such as Austria, Hungary, Serbia, and Bulgaria.

Cruising the edges of the continent by sea and enjoying excursions to its towns and cities is an excellent and understandably popular way to explore this culturally diverse area. With its range of cultures, religions, languages, governments, philosophies, music, and art, Europe is a post-modern, cosmopolitan paradise, with a rich tapestry of history and modernity.

The European Union, constituting of 27 member states since 1993, has a positive vision for Europe. With the introduction of the Euro currency, the EU has developed a single European market dedicated to freedom of movement of people, trade, and money, which fosters the cultural harmony of Europe’s many nations, despite their diversity, and encourages tourism and travel to its many different shores.
