Brits are more likely to try new things when on holiday
It seems that going on holiday is the perfect excuse for us Brits to try something new according to the latest research from a well-known UK provider of gift experiences. The study, which polled over 1,000 UK adults found that 51% admitted that a holiday is the perfect chance to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. 49% said that they would be more likely to try new foods and local cuisines, while 37% said that they were more likely to travel further afield to visit local attractions and points of interest.
The research, conducted by www.intotheblue.co.uk asked over 1,000 UK adults over the age of 18, “Are you more likely to try new things or activities on holiday rather than at home?” 51% said yes, 21% said maybe and 28% said no.
In a bid to see how adventurous people were on their holidays those who answered yes and maybe were also asked, “What would you do on holiday that you wouldn’t do at home?” Participants were asked to choose from a selection of 6 options; here are the results:
- Trying local cuisine/ new food – 49%
- Travel further afield to visit attractions – 37%
- Try water sports (including surfing, jet skiing and diving) – 26%
- Try an extreme sport (including bungee jumping, skydiving and climbing) – 18%
- Trust a stranger/take more risks – 9%
- Get a tattoo – 8%
The majority of those surveyed said that they would be more likely to try most of the options available while on holiday except for getting a tattoo; those aged between 18 and 44 were more likely to undertake riskier behaviour like that.
A spokesman from Into the Blue, Jim Maitland said:
“From our research we can clearly see that holidays offer the opportunity for people to try something new. Safety is still a concern for many as people are less likely to trust strangers or get tattoos. However it looks like people have more confidence when away to get out and about, try outdoor activities, visiting new places and eating local foods and delicacies.”
“Our moto this year is #BeMoreAdventurous and it’s great to see that people feel like they have more confidence on holiday to try something they wouldn’t normally do at home. Discovering new cuisines or activities you enjoy can lead to wonderful life experiences and new hobbies. However it is important to stay safe while out and about, as sometimes sun and booze can lead to people taking more risks. It was reassuring to see that the majority of people survey still keep their wits about them when on holiday and do their research before they set off rather than relying heavily on local knowledge”
