London is named world’s most popular travel destination

It will come as no surprise to many, particularly if they have tried to get accommodation at the last minute, but London is the most popular travel destination in the world, with 18.82 million overnight visitors. This is the fifth time in seven years that London has topped the list, but rather surprisingly New York has dropped out of the top five most visited cities, down to sixth place.

With attractions such as Tower Bridge, the National Gallery and the Tate Modern, these keep visitors coming, it is little wonder that it remains at the top of the list; it has an unrivalled mix of history, culture, culinary gems and cutting-edge creativity. Naturally Boris Johnson the Mayor is thrilled saying “I’m delighted that London has proudly held on to this coveted title, as we celebrate another triumphant and record-breaking year for tourism in the city”. The capital will welcome 18.82 million international overnight visitors this year that will spend a total of £13.3 billion.

The information is provided by MasterCard Global Destinations Cities Index, this provides a ranking of the 132 most visited cities around the world, revealing the number of people travelling overseas. It also indicates the cross border spending, which has amazingly increased faster than world real GDP since 2009.

There has been some surprises this year as Istanbul has noted a huge rise in visitors over a few recent years, making number five on the list which is why New York was pushed down to sixth place. The study is designed to help us understand just how interconnected cities really are; travel is now not confined to a few, but empowering greater numbers of people than ever before.
