Five different places for a spring break
The world is getting smaller, of that there is no doubt and with air travel no longer the provenance of the rich and privileged, seeking new destinations to spend some leisure time has become so much easier.
Everyone usually has a favourite place that they like to return to, but we thought that we would suggest just five that, whilst being different, have a charm and character that will leave visitors with memories that will remain with them for many years.
No list would be complete without a charming city and although we expect Paris in the spring or New York for that matter would be a lot of peoples list, we have chosen Lisbon, capital of Portugal. Here the visitor will experience food, arts and design scenes; great little places to eat and drink some of the best architecture to be seen and plenty of places to stay. Rooftop bars to enjoy a drink and spring is a great time to go and explore the warm cobbled streets.
For the more adventurous a long haul to the Caribbean visiting the Island of Cuba with guaranteed sunshine and if just seeing Havana still stuck in a time warp of the sixties with old American cars isn’t enough, go down to the beach and enjoy unspoilt Caribbean white sands and turquoise seas. There are some great deals for Cuba get them now before the friendly invasion from the USA starts in earnest now travel restrictions have been lifted.
Staying with the island theme, but this time nearer to home in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is a delight to the eyes of first time visitors, who will return again many times. With so much to see on the Island this is a place that one visit cannot justify. Warm sea and beaches and the Troodos Mountains with its fascinating monasteries, the people of Cyprus are friendly and English a common language. Cyprus was the home of Greek Mythological character Aphrodite and a visit to the “Baths of Aphrodite” where she used to bathe and mythology has us believe where she met her lover, the handsome Adonis, when he stopped off for a drink while hunting, to quench his thirst.
Staying in the Mediterranean but on the African Continent, Marrakech in Morocco has much to offer, it can be cold in the winter, but spring sees the sunshine and it is then that the hillsides become alive with a riot of colour. No trip to Marrakech would be complete without a trip to the bazaar or Souk with tempting food stalls and smells that are sure to stimulate your taste buds. Accommodation in the form of the traditional Riad is excellent, plentiful and will not break the bank.
Away from the beach but to the delight of skiers everywhere we include a spring destination where snow is pretty much guaranteed, but still has the glamour and après ski loved by all enthusiasts of winter sport, Zermatt. The resort is situated in wonderful Switzerland nestling below the famous Matterhorn, the picture of which many of us may see in the morning on the cereal packet, high enough to ensure snow in the spring. No queues for lifts, the highest ski lift in Europe and the sun on the terraces is properly warm for long, al fresco lunches. What could be better for the ski enthusiast?
