Most people probably never think of Armenia when they are debating a trip to Europe. Most people think of the more common tourist destinations, such as Italy, France, Spain, or Austria, just to name a few. But for sheer historical significance and relatively untouched scenery, this small country with a big heart has a lot to offer.
UK citizens wanting to visit Armenia will need a traveller’s visa to enter the country as a tourist. While rumours exist of being allowed an entry visa at any border point (such as with Turkey, where you can purchase a visa upon arrival), it is best to ask someone from the embassy for up-to-date travel arrangements. You can find the relevant information at www.armenianembassy.org.uk.
You can fly in direct to Yerevan, which will be your headquarters for travel. The beauty of this nation lies in the multitude of historic ruins within this mountainous country. Most of your travel will be done via guided tours which allow you to avoid the hassle of figuring this all out for yourself. Your hotel can give you information on what tours are in the area and who to contact. There will be plenty of brochures available.
A trip to Armenia is more suited to the adventuresome traveller. You will need to bring a firm pair of legs, a good pair of boots, and the desire to hike some pretty rigorous trails to see the best sights of this country. While busses and taxis do exist to a point, there are some destinations that are only reachable by foot.
