Mediterranean Cruises – the choices are endl...
Mediterranean Cruises are a good option for a first time cruise holiday; you have the advantage of being able to depart from the UK for many routes, (Royal Caribbean Cruises offer free parking at Southampton), and options of shorter trips if you are not quite sure if cruising is for you. P&O Cruises also offer a good range of voyages around the Mediterranean. P&O sometimes offer booking incentives such as on-board spending money to cover your drinks and extras.
Most major cruise lines offer both trips to the Western Mediterranean, taking in stops such as Lisbon, Gibraltar, Barcelona, and the South of France, and the Eastern Mediterranean (unless you have time and money for a much lengthier voyage, Eastern Mediterranean trips will be a “Fly and Cruise” where you join the ship at a Mediterranean Port; then you have more choice if you wish to go as far east as Dubrovnik, Athens or Istanbul.)
Confident travellers can save a lot of money on sightseeing by “going it alone”, rather than booking on to the ship’s excursions; at the majority of European ports it is safe to do this. Read the fine print as to where your ship docks though – just because Rome or Florence is listed as an excursion does not mean the ship docks right there, it may be many miles away.
If you want to follow your week’s cruise with a week in a hotel, operators such as Thomson Cruises offer extensive options for Cruise and Stay holidays in whichever location takes your fancy.
