Larnaca will be your first stop when you arrive in Cyprus, but it will probably not be your last. You can stay in an apartment, hotel, or luxury resort along the coast, but your adventure is just getting started. There is such an amazing amount of history to be discovered on this island that you will be hard-pressed to take it all in during a single visit – which is absolutely fine, because this place just begs for a return trip.
Larnaca was called Kition in ancient times, and much of its archaeological heritage has been extremely well preserved. There are plenty of museums within the city that showcase the relics, but the city doubles as an international hotspot for travel and panoramic ocean views. The harbour in Larnaca is a favourite destination for boat owners travelling the Mediterranean.
This is a distinctly Mediterranean island. The food is some of the best you will find in all of the Mediterranean regions of Europe, and the people are warm and friendly, and extremely welcoming of tourists. After all, you are their main source of income!
You can spend weeks in the museums of Larnaca. The District Museum is within walking distance of the city centre, and this place showcases historical artefacts from the Neolithic to Roman periods. There are also plenty of ruins detailing ancient Kition way of life, as well as the Larnaca Medieval Museum along the waterfront, just to name a few. And if you choose to head outside of the city, you can visit the site of Choirokoitia, which dates back to 7,000 BC.
Cyprus has an endless supply of history, and probably some of the most well preserved artefacts within all of Europe. For a combination of seaside fun and historical adventure, you cannot find better!
