Tunisia is one of the first places any traveller should consider when thinking about North Africa as a vacation destination. This is the beginner’s course for Africa, an environment where the tourists are so plentiful that on some days they seem to outnumber the residents of Tunisia.
The country has year-round sun, and the golden sandy beaches draw tourists in from around the world. But it is not just the sand dunes of the Sahara or the beaches themselves that pull in visitors from the world over. There is the capital city itself, Tunis. This bustling city is an urban mesa in the surrounding sea of sand, yet still holds enough traditions within its walls to make you feel as though you are stepping back in time to the reign of Sultans.
Tunisia is also home to the famous sand scenes from four of the Star Wars movies filmed by George Lucas. Not only have the sets been preserved as they are in the movies, but some of the locations have actually been turned into hotels. Star Wars fans from around the globe flock to Tunisia in droves, eager for their chance to physically be a part of one of the world’s most acclaimed science-fiction films.
Tunisia is a land where the modern world is in flux with the old, traditional customs. Travellers should expect to encounter both acceptance and aversion depending on what part of the country they go to, and should tread lightly at all times. This is a country that is well worth the visit, but sticking to the most common attractions is probably a wise choice.
